Why Book Design & Production Don’t Always Speak the Same Language

Jobs that offer a bit of a challenge can be the most satisfying. Recently, a customer requested a perfect bound book that opened flat. The issue – they wanted 2 different materials interspersed throughout: near impossible when perfect binding a glued spine.

The customer understood but was set on a lay flat book with the materials interspersed. Luckily, thread sewing the inner pages allowed us to do this, and we worked with the customer to finalise the artwork for this approach.

We appreciate not everyone is familiar with technical terms, so we try to make job specs customer friendly. Here, the book cover had a blind emboss (without foil or ink), while sewing involved white thread that would show in the centre spread of the folded sections. We worked up the spec to ensure the customer knew exactly what they were getting.

For the book cover, we used a bold Red Colorplan card, with the inner pages alternating between Colorplan Bright Red and Munken Rough Kristall True White. The result, a fantastic looking book that the customer loved, and we thoroughly enjoyed making.
